思いがけない配管工：Safaa Sukkariah氏は配管工の訓練を受け、のちにシリアの避難民女性向けに、配管工として養成・雇用する会社を自身で立ち上げました。
パリの慈善団体が美術館ガイドとして避難民を養成：慈善団体のSama for Allは火曜日に、パリの二大美術館にて避難民をガイドとして養成している活動に対し、100万ドルの賞金を手にしました。共同創立者で、シリア難民のビジネスウーマンであるSaoud Nanaa氏は、活動により文化交流を促進したかったと語りました。このスキームはフランス国内で数多く展開する、避難民や移民を雇用する革新的で市民主導型の活動の一つです。
変革の種をまく：ウガンダ北部のBidibidiには避難民のグループが移住しています。彼らは、地元農家のうち、所有する土地を自身では耕作しきれないが、土地を休ませることを望まないグループとの間で組合を設立しました。他のイニシアチブはこれらウガンダ在住の避難民に新規事業や事業の拡大のため金融サービスへのアクセスを振興しています。
リンカンシャー避難民医師プロジェクト（LRDP）：LRDP は避難民の医師たちが、イギリスの国民保健サービス（NHS）での研修、語学講習、ボランティア配置といった形で参加することを支援します。その第一段のグループが2019年10月よりグリムズビー（地名）で迎えられました。LRDPの臨床プログラムの理事を務めるAndrew Mowatと、ある引退した医師は、「彼ら（避難民）はこれまでの人生から莫大な、異なる経験を持っている。プロフェッショナルな人生と、避難民としての人生経験だ。これは彼らが患者に対しより共感し、彼らの苦しみ、痛み、ストレスに寄り添うことができるということと思う」と語りました。
ユニクロにて：ガンビア出身の避難民であるFamaraはイタリア・ミラノのユニクロ店舗にて3か月前に働き始め、これにより彼の人生が変わり、明るい未来が見え始めたと語りました。この日本発ファッション小売りメーカーは、避難民の家族への衣服の寄付を10年前から開始しており、現在は日本やヨーロッパの各地の店舗にて避難民を養成、雇用しています。

‘A rich exchange’: The refugees teaching languages in Brazil. Araço Cultural looks like any other language school, complete with scrawled whiteboards and beige school chairs. But it exclusively employs teachers from war-torn and crisis-stricken lands, including Haiti, Congo, Venezuela and Syria. Read more
Accidental plumber: Safaa Sukkariah trained as a plumber and started her own company that trains and employs other Syrian refugee women.
Paris charity trains refugees as museum guides. The charity Sama for All on Tuesday won a share of a million-dollar prize for its work training refugees to work as guides at two of Paris’s top art galleries. Co-founder Saoud Nanaa, a Syrian refugee and businesswoman, said she wanted to promote cultural exchange. The scheme is one of a number of innovative, citizen-led projects aimed at getting refugees and migrants in France into work.
Sowing seeds of change. Groups of refugees in Bidibidi, a vast settlement in northern Uganda, have been forming cooperatives with local farmers who are unable to cultivate all their land and would rather see it farmed than lie fallow. A separate initiative promotes access to financial services for refugees in Uganda wanting to start or expand businesses.
The Lincolnshire Refugee Doctor Project (LRDP) helps refugee doctors join Britain’s National Health Service (NHS) through training, language courses and volunteer placements. It welcomed its first cohort to Grimsby in October 2019.
Andrew Mowat, clinical programme director of LRDP and a retired doctor said “They bring hugely different experiences of their journeys – professional journey and I also mean journey as a refugee. That means that they will be much more empathic towards patients, if they understand suffering and pain and distress.”
UNIQLO work: Famara, a refugee from the Gambia, started working at a UNIQLO clothing store in Milan, Italy, three months ago and says it has changed his life and that he now feels his future is bright. The Japanese fashion retailer began donating clothing to refugee families more than 10 years ago but now also trains and employs refugees in its stores in Japan and Europe. Video on Twitter.
