<b>Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – November 9th 2020</b> <i>Case name</i>: 20201109-AEG720 <i>Situation</i>: 60 people in distress near Zakynthos, their fate is unclear <i>Status of WTM Investigation</i>: Ongoing <i>Place of Incident</i>: Aegean Sea Position: 36.8510685,24.2447784 <i>Summary</i> In the morning of November 11th Alarmphone was alerted to a boat in distress carrying around 60 people, among them women and children. People on the boat were exhausted and panicking, people on the boat reported the vessel was seriously unbalanced. The boat was heading from Turkey to Italy. After an initial call with the boat, during which a GPS position was relayed, we lost contact. At 10.30h CET we informed authorities of the situation via e-mail. At 11.20h CET people on the boat informed us that the Greek coast guard were attempting to haul their vessel towards the coast, but did not succeed in doing so. Upon calling authorities to enquire about the situation we were denied all information. In a second call the operator confirmed the situation people on the boat had described to us, but refused to inform us where the boat was being taken. The nearest port to the last position would have been Milos island. We lost contact to the boat in distress again. Throughout the afternoon we attempted to receive updated information on the ongoing rescue operation, but authorities refused to provide us with this info. In the morning of September 12th the situation remained unchanged; we contacted journalists with a request to report on the case. The fate of the 60 people fleeing Turkey remains unclear. We are still investigating the detailed developments and will include potential updates into this report.
